About Steve Owens & Summertime
Steve Owens, Lead Vocals. Growing up listening to country music from artists such as Ray Price, Roy Acuff, Lynn Anderson, Mel McDaniel, and many others, Steve developed an interest in music early in life. Steve began taking guitar lessons at age 8 and began singing in churches, performing for civic groups, and also performed at the North Carolina State Fair at age 10. While taking guitar lessons Steve also learned some basics on Bass guitar.At age 15 Steve joined local gospel group “The Carroll’s” where he traveled the east coastplaying bass guitar and later moving to Acoustic guitar and vocals. Though it was many years before Steve would become involved with Carolina Beach Music, there was something magical about it the first time he heard a Carolina Beach Music Band perform live in 1982.It wasn’t until around 2001 when Steve was called and ask to join the “High Roller Band” as leadvocalist that he had been the front man/ vocalist in this genre of music. Though this band hada successful run, it dis-banded in 2005.Steve Later joined the Castaways in 2007 as lead male vocalist, leaving in 2008 to take a position as male vocalist at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre. While working at the theatre, Stevebegan working in the studio recording “Greatest Love Ever Known” which was released on theCarolina Soul Collection compilation CD in the fall of 2009. This song went to # 3 on one of thebeach charts and finished # 10 for the entire year 2010.In early 2011 Steve began talking with perspective musicians about forming a band. With allthings coming together, rehearsals started that spring and “Steve Owens and Summertime”played their first job in August 2011. With a self titled CD released in April 2012, Steve Owensand Summertime has seen much success with their first release “I’d Give Up Everything For You” reaching # 1 in the summer of 2012 and other releases still climbing the charts. People are saying that “Steve Owens and Summertime” are a breath of fresh air to the industry. “With the love of music and a love for people, it is my pleasure to get on stage each performance and entertain the people. I have been blessed with what people say is a talent and I have also been blessed with the greatest band I could have ever imagined. It’s an honor to share the stage with the guys of Summertime”
Jimmy Weaver, Keyboard. Jimmy started playing at 12 years old with High School musicians in Bro T Holla and many popular local bands. He recorded and album with The Blazers in 1978 that had rave reviews in Italy. His recording career spans decades recording with The Embers, The Back N Time band, The Castaways, The Pharmers, The Help, Doug Prescott Band and many others. Jimmy has performed many different styles from Beach, Rock, Country, to Blues, Soul, Jazz quartet, Swing, Corporate and Tribute Bands. He has also played solo for the last 20 years.The bands he has been a member of include The Embers from Raleigh, The Main Event Band of Greenville, The Castaways out of Henderson, Slowhand a Tribute to Eric Claptin, Back N Time Band and The West Street Band. Jimmy has opened or performed with Bo Diddly, George Thoroughgood and The Destroyers, earl Scruggs review, Arrogance, Nantucket, including sitting in with The Fantastic Shakers,Craig Woolard Band, Coastline and many others.
John Downing, Bass Guitar. John has been around music most of his life. He started playing trumpet when he was in 7th grade. His father was a preacher so he spent alot of time at the church learning to play the piano. One day someone had left a bass guitar at the church and John found his first love. He totally self taught himself and has been playing ever since. He played his entire high school years in the marching band playing trumpet and also played bass guitar in the jazz band. During 12th grade he was invited to play in a college band called Mixed Emotion. He played with these guys 10 years. They played a mixture of dance and beach. John really enjoyed the beach part of it and later went on to play with a group of guys called Delta Riders. This lasted a few years until he joined The High Roller Band where he had the opportunity to work with Steve Owens. Steve's lead and John's harmony made a lasting impression on many people. High Roller kept him busy until he got a phone call to substitute with The Main Event Band in 2006. After just one show he was offered a position with them that he held until Steve Owen's and Summertime was formed in 2011. During John's musical career he has had the pleasure to play along side with Percy Sledge, the Embers, Band of Oz, Jim Quick and Coastline, Chairman of the Board, Craig Woolard Band and many others. John is married to Karen, lives in Wake Forest with his three dogs, Ella, Marley and Rusty. He also plays and leads worship in his church, C3 Raleigh.
Robin Woodard, Lead Guitar. Robin Camron Woodard was born May 3rd, 1974, and started playing guitar at age three. “I remember being disappointed after I found out that I was gonna be a white boy for the rest of my life because I wanted to be like Chuck Berry". At age 14 I began playing professionally in the bar scene, playing in country cover bands. “The first bar gigs I played required that my parents be present the whole time because they were afraid of being fined a citation for having a minor around the bar area serving alcohol". By the age of 18 Robin was playing all over the state, and won several guitar contests. “It was like the movie Cross Roads, cutting heads and all that. I would always win because most of the other players couldn't play hillbilly licks".Robin plays various styles and genres. Bluegrass, Jazz, Delta Blues, Rockabilly, Rock, Metal, and Country. “I’ve always played what I was asked, but I always put my "THING" in it so to speak, but Steve Owens and Summertime is the first Beach music band I've ever played in". Robin has also worked with Grammy nominated producer John Custer who produced several songs Robin wrote for the rock band he formed in 1998 called "Gyromatics". “I never liked thename of that band, but Besides it isn’t everyday you get to work with someone like John Custer, he's the best... salt of the earth, really".Robin met Steve Owens at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre. “After the Theatre closed Steve asked if I would help write a song with him then he told me," Look now I'll be back about a year from now and I want you to be my guitar player". "All I can say is Steve Owens is killer and true to his word so I dropped my other gig and went with Steve". “I really like working' with Steve and I believe that he has the sound that the people want, It’s a pleasure working with him and the rest of the guys in Summertime. He really knows how to put a good band together. Roy, John, Joey, Dave, Garth… they are the cream of the crop, and I'm very thankful to be part of this group".You can see footage of Robin on YOUTUBE. Joey Tucker, Trumpet. Joey attended East Carolina University where he received a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in music and a minor in science, and a Master of Music, with a concentration in music theory and performance. While at ECU, Joey had the pleasure of performing on a European tour with the ECU Symphony Orchestra, and the privilege of performing with guest artists such as Melton Mustafa, Maynard Ferguson, Bob Mintzer and the Yellow Jackets, and Branford Marsalis. Joey has performed numerous solo and ensemble performances, musical productions, and is a former musician for Anheuser-Busch Entertainment. Joey currently lives in Wendell,NC and is the band director at Fike High School in Wilson. In addition to being a member of Steve Owens and Summertime, Joey also performs with the Tar River Symphonic Band, and is lead trumpet for the North Carolina Reveler’s Orchestra based in Durham, NC. Joey is a current member of the NC Bandmaster’s Association, NC Music Educator’s Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor’s Society. “It’s a pleasure having a talented and Dedicated Trumpet player in Summertime… Joey is the best,” said Steve Owens.
Alex Almasy, Trumpet, Saxophone, and Trombone. Originally from New York but raised in NC multi-instrumentalist Alex Almasy learned his trade during his time at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. He was a Music Performance major and while there was able to perform with many world renowned musicians and was in a highly paced learning environment.Upon his return to North Carolina he has played with such groups as The Raleigh Jazz Orchestra, NC Revelers (jazz trumpet soloist), The Triangle Jazz Orchestra (lead trumpet) and various small mainstream jazz and Dixieland groups such as Decatur Street Beat. He also played with the award winning Mighty Lester Band (which played major blues festivals across the country) along with being in the High Roller Band where he met Steve Owens. After the HRB dissolved Alex enjoyed a few years with The Castaways based out of Durham, NC before joining Steve Owens and Summertime as part of a three piece horn section.Alex plays numerous brass and woodwind instruments with flawless proficiency. Regardless of what he is performing, you will be treated to an energetic experience whether he is part of the section or taking a fiery solo.
Dave Owens, Drums. Keeping the beat in the pocket for Steve Owens and Summertime is Dave Owens. Before joining Steve Owens and Summertime Dave performed with many groups over the years including, the Main Event Band, Johnny Dollar, and the Cammy award winning Delta Riders. “Dave is the kind of drummer that keeps it in the pocket at all times and can read my next move. Like all the members of Summertime, it’s an honor to have Dave as part of the band” said Steve Owens. When Dave isn’t sitting behind the drums he can be found coaching football or spending time with his son.
Garth Brannur Haas, Saxophone. Garth is from Hillsborough NC, and resides in Greenville NC. Saxophonist and vocalist that enjoys multiple styles of music, favorites being Jazz and Blues. “I enjoy making music and making many new friends along the way.” Garth now looks forward to using his talents to entertain the crowds as he performs with “Steve Owens and Summertime”
Garth Brannur Haas
Grant Leggett, Production Manager/FOH Engineer. Grant has loved music since he was a child. He began his career by running sound just after completing high school for his first band named Atlantis in 1985. He also played the sax and mixed from the stage. After a few member changes, he began mixing from the sound console and the rest is history. Later he was able to work for Mixed Emotion. In 2001 he was the Sound Engineer for the Cammy Award Winning Delta Riders. Grant later joined The Main Event Band out of Greenville and worked with them for 6 years. During his time with MEB, he had opportunities to work with many local bands, Johnny Dollar, Band of Oz, Parmalee, Spare Change, Mark Roberts Band, Breeze Band, and Emily Minor. He has also spent his talents with many local festivals and events. His career also included being the FOH at Tiebreakers Sports Bar in Greenville. During this time he was able to work with some fantastic bands like Parmalee, Tailgate, Thompson Square, Craven Melon, and The Nighthawks. His vast sound career experiences lead him to his current position as Sound Engineer for Steve Owens Summertime Band!
